Angels and Shepherds
A German Baroque Christmas
When dealing with Christian subject matter, Baroque artists and composers were often inspired by the contrast between the significance of the incarnation and its humble pastoral setting. We will highlight this contrast with a special programme of Nativity repertoire, that sets music of jubilation and magnificence against pastoral simplicity and tenderness, with the aim of achieving an effect of chiaroscuro. Featured composers include Hammerschmidt, Schütz, Praetorius, Buxtehude and Johann Christoph Bach.
